The introduction to the new statutes of CI approved by the Board of Directors in 2008 states that “CI will aim to establish chapters (offices) around the world to the strengthening of its work in the area of development and human rights”.

The work of CI therefore was extended to the people of Sierra Leone on November 7, 2008. The CI has legal status and recognized by the Government of Sierra Leone. The work of CISL involves not only the promotion, but also the protection of human rights in Africa, Sierra Leone in particular.

The central role of individuals and NGOs in the protection and promotion of human rights in Africa and elsewhere in the world has been recognized and legitimized by the General Assembly of the United Nations when it adopted, on 9 December 1998, Human Rights Defenders Declaration. The Declaration specifically includes the right to defend the rights of other people, to hold human rights meetings, to access international organizations, to seek effective remedy, etc.

Conscience International will continue the pursuit of its mandate with renewed vigour to implement and support human rights and development programs in Sierra Leone.
