ABOUT US

Conscience International (CI) is independent, non-partisan and non-profit human rights organization based in Banjul, The Gambia.

The CI seeks to amplify a conscience base world in which no one is subjected to human rights abuse; rather promote the mobilization of the limited resources available to foster global development which is the genesis of good governance and a catalyst to peace and stability in the world.

BACKGROUND: Arising out of discussions initiated by a group of young and talented visionaries, meeting in Banjul on the 24th July 2003, CI was founded in January 2004. However, July 29 2008, the Conscience International was renamed; thereby repealing the People Against Injustice (PAIN), and thus making the CI an internationally centered and focus NGO.

Working with national, sub-regional, regional and international human rights and development organizations, CI documents violence and discrimination against women, men and children and adds an international action overlay to support their efforts to advance the individual rights of women, men and children who are suffering abuse.

CI is a recognized Non Governmental Organization (NGO) registered in conformity with the Laws of The Gambia and has Observer Status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights of the African Union (AU). It has a working relationship with The Department of State for Social Welfare of The Gambia, member of the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net), Affiliated with The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), member of The NGO Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC), a very active member of the Darfur Consortium, and also sit on the UN technical working group on HIV/AIDS (UNTWG) in The Gambia and amongst others.

  • To undertake fact finding, research and documentation of human rights and development
  • To promote good governance, respect for the rule of law, democracy and legal protection of human rights
  • To encourage a closer exchange of information and experiences between human rights and development organizations, individuals, government officials and the community.
  • To enhance the knowledge of legal rights and remedies of vulnerable groups such as women and children, the disabled, prisoners, refugee and internally displaced persons.
  • To establish a resource center for human rights books, journals, magazines, newsletters and video tapes.
  • To build the capacity of human rights activists both at local and international level.

OFFICE

CI is currently renting a building at Fajara in The Gambia, to house its offices. The renting of the building from the year 2004 has enabled the organization to operationalize its activities in a friendly environment. This has continued to service CI with a financial burden – securing funds to maintain and enhance it operations.
